Dental Crowns in Dallas — Medit Scanner, Same-Day Temporaries, Emax and Zirconia at Frankford & Preston Road

A dental crown restores a tooth that has been too significantly damaged, decayed, or weakened for a filling to address — protecting it from further fracture and restoring full function and appearance. At Thrive Dental & Orthodontics in Dallas, we use the Medit intraoral scanner for all crown procedures — no goopy impressions, no gagging, no mess. We place same-day temporary crowns so you leave your preparation appointment with a natural-looking restoration already in place. And our permanent crowns are fabricated from premium Emax porcelain or Zirconia ceramic — materials that look completely natural and last significantly longer than older porcelain-fused-to-metal designs.

We’re on the corner of Frankford and Preston Road. Our chandelier lobby has complimentary coffee, tea, and water. Every treatment room has two TVs with Netflix, comfort headphones, a pillow and blanket, and a warm towel after every procedure. Crown preparation appointments typically run 60–90 minutes — genuinely comfortable in our treatment rooms.

What Makes Our Dallas Crown Process Different

Medit digital scanner — no impressions

We use the Medit intraoral scanner at our Dallas office for all crown procedures. It captures a precise 3D digital model of your prepared tooth and surrounding bite in minutes — no trays, no putty, no gagging, no waiting for material to set. The digital file goes directly to our dental lab electronically with exceptional accuracy — crowns fabricated from digital scans consistently fit better than those made from physical impressions.

For patients who have had bad experiences with impressions at other offices, this changes the crown process entirely. The scan is one of the most appreciated parts of the crown appointment at our Dallas location.

Same-day temporary crown — you leave with a restoration

After your tooth is prepared, we fabricate and place a same-day temporary crown before you leave the appointment. Your prepared tooth is fully protected. Your bite and appearance are maintained. You’re not walking around with a vulnerable, sensitive tooth while waiting one to two weeks for your permanent crown to arrive from the lab.

Patients consistently tell us the transition from temporary to permanent feels seamless — they’ve been wearing something functional and natural-looking since day one.

Premium materials — Emax and Zirconia

Our Dallas crowns are fabricated from two premium ceramic materials:

Emax lithium disilicate — used for front teeth and highly visible areas. Emax has a natural translucency and light-reflecting depth that closely mimics natural tooth enamel. A well-made Emax crown is virtually indistinguishable from surrounding teeth when properly color-matched. Highly aesthetic and durable — with proper care lasting 15 years or longer.

Zirconia — used for back teeth where durability under bite forces matters most. Zirconia handles the significant chewing pressure of molars without the fracture risk of older porcelain-fused-to-metal designs. Extremely strong, biocompatible, and long-lasting. The aesthetic quality of modern Zirconia has improved dramatically — today’s Zirconia crowns look natural even in visible areas.

Both materials are fabricated at high-quality partner labs from precise Medit digital scans — the combination of premium materials and digital accuracy produces consistently excellent results.

Digital X-rays and photos on the treatment room TV

At our Dallas office, digital X-rays and intraoral photos are displayed on the TVs in your treatment room before any treatment discussion begins. You see exactly what your dentist sees — the extent of decay, the crack line, the existing restoration — and understand why a crown is recommended before committing to any treatment. For patients who want to understand what’s happening with their own teeth rather than just take a dentist’s word for it, this is one of the most valued aspects of our Dallas office.

Two TVs, Netflix, comfort headphones, pillow and blanket

Crown preparation appointments run 60–90 minutes. Every operatory at our Dallas location has two TVs — one above the chair and one at eye level — with Netflix throughout. Comfort headphones are in every room. A pillow and blanket are available. A warm towel ends the appointment. For a procedure that takes the better part of an hour in the chair, these details make a real difference.

When Do You Need a Dental Crown?

A crown is recommended when a tooth cannot be adequately restored by a filling alone. Common situations:

Significant decay. When a cavity has progressed so far that less than half the healthy tooth structure remains, a filling won’t provide adequate support or longevity. A crown caps the remaining structure and distributes bite forces across the whole tooth.

Cracked tooth. A crack — especially one extending toward the root — puts the tooth at risk of catastrophic fracture under normal biting. A crown holds the tooth together and prevents the crack from propagating. Left untreated, a cracked tooth often eventually fractures to the point of extraction.

After a root canal. Root canal-treated teeth become more brittle over time — the tooth no longer receives nutrients from the pulp and is significantly more prone to fracture without crown protection. Particularly for molars and premolars that absorb chewing pressure, a crown after root canal treatment is essential for the long-term survival of the tooth.

Large existing filling. A tooth with a very large old filling — particularly a silver amalgam filling taking up most of the tooth — is at high risk of fracture. Replacing the filling with a crown protects what remains of the natural tooth.

Cosmetic restoration. When a tooth is severely discolored, malformed, or chipped beyond what veneers or bonding can adequately address, a crown restores both appearance and function simultaneously. Our Dallas cosmetic dentistry team uses Emax crowns for front teeth cosmetic restoration with results that are aesthetically comparable to porcelain veneers.

Dental bridge anchor. A dental bridge is held in place by crowns cemented onto the teeth on either side of the gap — the abutment teeth. Crown quality and fit directly affects the longevity of the bridge.

The Crown Process at Our Dallas Office

Exam and diagnosis

Your dentist evaluates the tooth — digital X-rays on the treatment room TV show the extent of decay, crack depth, existing restoration size, and root health. You see exactly what’s being assessed and understand the clinical reason a crown is recommended before any decision is made. Complete cost information is provided before treatment is scheduled.

Preparation appointment — with same-day temporary

The affected tooth is shaped to create space for the crown. Local anesthetic is administered to numb the area completely — you feel pressure but no pain. Nitrous oxide is available if you want additional support. Netflix on throughout in your own treatment room. The Medit scanner then captures the preparation in minutes — no impressions. Before you leave, your same-day temporary crown is fabricated and placed. Warm towel. You walk out with a functional, natural-looking restoration already in place.

Care of your temporary

Avoid sticky or very hard foods during the fabrication period — typically one to two weeks. Floss carefully around the temporary. If the temporary loosens or comes off, call us promptly — don’t leave a prepared tooth unprotected.

Permanent crown delivery

When your permanent crown arrives from the lab, you return for a final appointment — typically 30–45 minutes. Your dentist removes the temporary, tries the permanent crown in to check fit, bite, and color, adjusts contacts as needed, and cements it permanently. You leave with a fully functional, long-lasting restoration.

Caring for Your Crown

A crown-protected tooth still requires the same care as natural teeth. The crown itself can’t decay — but the underlying tooth at the margin where crown meets natural tooth is vulnerable to decay if oral hygiene is poor. Brush twice daily with an electric toothbrush — the most effective way to clean the gumline around crown margins. Floss daily including around the crown. Maintain your regular dental cleanings every six months — your dentist checks crown integrity and margin health at every exam.

Avoid using crowned teeth as tools — opening packages, biting nails, chewing ice — all habits that can chip or crack even a high-quality ceramic crown. Night guards are recommended for patients who grind at night, as grinding generates significant forces that accelerate crown wear.

With proper care and premium materials, a well-made crown can last 15 years or longer.

Crowns and Cosmetic Dentistry — Under One Roof

For patients who need a crown on a front tooth, the aesthetic outcome is as important as the clinical one. Our Dallas cosmetic team uses Emax crowns for front teeth — a ceramic with translucency and color depth that replicates natural enamel better than any other restorative material. Color-matched precisely to surrounding teeth under proper lighting conditions, an Emax crown on a front tooth is genuinely difficult to distinguish from natural enamel.

For patients considering both crown work and broader smile improvement — whitening, veneers, or a smile makeover — our Dallas office has cosmetic dentistry and restorative dentistry under the same roof. Sequencing these treatments correctly — always whitening first, then matching restorations to the whitened shade — is something our Dallas team coordinates automatically as part of any comprehensive treatment plan.

Insurance and Payment for Dental Crowns in Dallas

Most dental insurance plans that include major restorative coverage contribute toward dental crowns — typically 50–70% after the annual deductible, subject to the plan’s annual maximum. Our team verifies your specific benefits before treatment begins and provides a written cost estimate before any work is scheduled. No surprises.

We accept 18+ PPO dental insurance plans at our Dallas location including Delta Dental, Aetna, Cigna, Humana, MetLife, Blue Cross Blue Shield, United Healthcare, and Guardian. FSA and HSA payment is accepted. Cherry financing is available for patients who need flexible monthly payment options — quick approval and flexible terms. Our Healthy Smiles Discount Plan at $89/year provides discounted rates on crowns and all other services. Visit our insurance page for the complete carrier list.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I really leave the preparation appointment with a temporary crown already placed?

Yes — we fabricate and cement a same-day temporary crown before you leave your preparation appointment. Your tooth is protected and your bite is maintained while the permanent crown is fabricated at our partner lab, typically one to two weeks.

Yes — our Dallas office uses the Medit intraoral scanner for all crown procedures. No trays, no putty, no gagging. The scan is more accurate than any physical impression and takes only a few minutes.

Emax lithium disilicate is used for front teeth — it has exceptional translucency and natural-looking aesthetics comparable to natural enamel. Zirconia is used for back teeth — it handles the high bite forces of molars without fracture risk. Both are premium ceramic materials from our partner labs.

With proper care — regular cleanings, daily brushing and flossing, avoiding habits like grinding or using teeth as tools — a high-quality Emax or Zirconia crown can last 15 years or longer. The main threats to longevity are decay at the margin and mechanical damage from grinding.

The preparation appointment is performed under local anesthetic — you feel pressure and movement but should not feel pain. Nitrous oxide is available for additional comfort. Some sensitivity around the prepared tooth while wearing the temporary is normal and resolves when the permanent crown is placed.
