Routine cleaning (prophylaxis) — every six months for patients with healthy gums. Removes plaque and tartar above the gumline. Covered by most PPO dental insurance plans at 80–100% with little or no out-of-pocket cost.
Deep dental cleaning (scaling and root planing) — for patients with active gum disease. Goes below the gumline to remove bacterial deposits from root surfaces. Typically two appointments — one side of the mouth per visit. The American Dental Association recommends professional cleanings every six months as the most effective defense against gum disease. If a deep cleaning is needed, your hygienist and dentist explain exactly why using your own clinical measurements before any recommendation is made.

Brushing. Two minutes twice a day. An electric toothbrush removes significantly more plaque around the gumline than any manual brush — the single most impactful upgrade to your home routine.
