Root Canal in Richardson — In-House Treatment, Same Day, Lower Cost Than a Specialist

If you’re in tooth pain right now — call us.

(972) 248-9119 — Thrive Dental & Orthodontics Richardson

A root canal relieves the pain caused by a dental infection — it doesn’t cause it. At our Richardson office on the corner of East Renner Road and North Star Road, we perform most root canals in-house rather than referring to a specialist. That means faster treatment, lower cost, and a team that has been caring for this community for over a decade. Get directions · Book online

What Is a Root Canal?

Inside every tooth, beneath the enamel and dentin, is a soft core called the pulp — containing nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. When bacteria reach the pulp through a deep cavity, a crack, or a traumatic injury, infection develops. Once infected, the pulp cannot heal on its own. The bacteria spread, the pain intensifies, and without treatment the infection moves into surrounding bone and soft tissue.

A root canal removes the infected pulp, cleans the canal space thoroughly, seals it permanently, and preserves the tooth so it can continue serving you — in most cases for decades. According to the American Association of Endodontists, more than 15 million root canals are performed in the US every year. It is one of the most routinely performed dental procedures — and the one with the most undeservedly bad reputation.

The pain patients associate with root canals is the pain of the infection before treatment. The procedure itself removes that pain. With modern local anesthetic, a root canal is clinically comparable in comfort to having a filling placed.

Why In-House Root Canals Matter for Richardson Patients

Most dental offices refer root canal cases to an endodontist — a specialist whose fees reflect that designation. An endodontist root canal can cost two to three times what the same procedure costs when performed by an experienced in-house dental team. Add a specialist appointment delay of days or weeks while you’re in pain, a second office to navigate, and a separate set of records — and the referral path is both more expensive and more inconvenient.

At our Richardson office, we perform most root canals in-house. Our dental team handles the vast majority of root canal cases comfortably and effectively — same day when clinically appropriate. You call with a toothache, we assess it, and if a root canal is what you need, we treat it at the same appointment in most cases.

We’re honest about what we refer. Extremely calcified canals, severely curved roots, or cases that genuinely require specialist-level intervention get coordinated within our Thrive network before going to an outside endodontist. Those cases are a small minority. Most of what our Richardson patients present with, we handle right here — at significantly lower cost and far less delay.

What you save by keeping treatment in-house:

  • Two to three times less than specialist endodontist rates for the same procedure
  • Same-day treatment rather than waiting days for a specialist appointment
  • No second office, no separate records, no coordination gap
  • A team that already knows your dental history

Signs You May Need a Root Canal

Some root canals are discovered at routine dental cleanings through X-rays before any symptoms develop. Others announce themselves clearly:

  • Severe, throbbing toothache — especially pain that worsens when biting or applying pressure
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers long after the stimulus is removed
  • Spontaneous tooth pain with no obvious trigger
  • A tooth that was painful and suddenly stopped — this often means the nerve has died, not that the problem resolved
  • Darkening or discoloration of a single tooth
  • Swollen, tender, or painful gum tissue around a specific tooth
  • A pimple-like bump on the gum near the affected tooth — a sign of abscess
  • Persistent bad taste not resolved by brushing
  • Facial or jaw swelling alongside tooth pain

If you have any of these — especially severe pain, swelling, or fever alongside tooth pain — call us immediately at (972) 248-9119. We prioritize dental emergencies and can often see you the same day. A dental infection treated promptly is a root canal. Left alone, it may become an extraction and a significantly more complex path forward.

Root Canal vs. Extraction — Why Saving the Tooth Matters

This is the most common question patients ask when told they need a root canal. The answer in almost every case is clear: a root canal that saves your natural tooth is the better long-term outcome.

Your natural teeth maintain the jawbone density that surrounds them, support neighboring teeth structurally, and function more efficiently than any replacement. When a tooth is extracted, the bone beneath it begins to resorb within weeks, and neighboring teeth gradually drift toward the gap. Replacing the missing tooth requires a dental bridge or partial denture — both of which cost more than a root canal and crown combined and neither of which fully replicates a natural tooth.

A root canal followed by a dental crown at our Richardson office preserves your natural tooth, maintains jawbone integrity, and with proper care can last 20 years or longer. When extraction is genuinely unavoidable — when a tooth is too severely fractured or bone loss has compromised it beyond saving — we say so clearly. But we always explore saving the tooth first, and we’ve been having that conversation honestly with Richardson patients for over a decade.

Does a Root Canal Hurt?

No — not the procedure itself. This is worth stating plainly because fear of root canal pain is the most common reason patients delay treatment and allow infections to worsen.

With modern local anesthetic, a root canal is genuinely comfortable during the procedure. Nitrous oxide is available at our Richardson office for patients who want additional support. After treatment, mild soreness around the treated area is normal for two to four days as surrounding tissue heals. Over-the-counter pain medication manages this for most patients.

For patients who need prescription pain relief or antibiotics — particularly for significant infections — our Richardson dental team prescribes at your appointment. The Walgreens directly across the street means your prescription is filled before you’re even home. No extra trip, no waiting across town in discomfort.

The Root Canal Procedure at Our Richardson Office

Step 1 — Diagnosis and digital X-rays

Your dentist takes detailed digital X-rays assessing canal anatomy, the extent of infection in surrounding bone, and whether in-house treatment is appropriate. Our digital imaging requires significantly less radiation than traditional film X-rays and produces clear images your dentist reviews with you immediately on screen.

Step 2 — Complete anesthesia

Local anesthetic is administered to fully numb the tooth and surrounding tissue. You will feel pressure during the procedure but should not feel pain. We don’t begin any instrumentation until you’re completely comfortable — and if you feel any discomfort at any point, more anesthetic is administered immediately. Nitrous oxide is available for patients who want additional comfort support.

Step 3 — Netflix on

Every treatment room at our Richardson office has two TVs — one above the chair and one at eye level — with Netflix available throughout. Root canal appointments run 60–90 minutes. Patients consistently tell us that a familiar show combined with thorough numbing made the experience far more manageable than they feared. The reputation doesn’t match the reality — and the TV helps.

Step 4 — Access and cleaning

A small opening is created in the top of the tooth to access the pulp chamber. Using fine instruments, the infected pulp, nerve tissue, and bacteria are carefully removed from the chamber and each root canal. The canals are shaped and irrigated thoroughly with antimicrobial solution. This is the most time-intensive step and the one that determines long-term success.

Step 5 — Sealing

Once the canals are thoroughly cleaned and shaped, they’re filled with gutta-percha — a biocompatible rubber-like material — and sealed permanently against future bacterial entry. A temporary or permanent filling closes the access opening.

Step 6 — Crown placement

In most cases, a dental crown is placed over the treated tooth at a follow-up appointment to restore strength and protect against fracture. We place same-day temporary crowns at our Richardson office so you leave the crown preparation appointment with a restoration already in place. The permanent crown — fabricated from premium Emax or Zirconia ceramic using digital scanning rather than impressions — is cemented at your final appointment.

After Your Root Canal — What to Expect

The first 24–48 hours: Some soreness when biting is normal. Take ibuprofen as directed — it addresses both pain and inflammation. Eat soft foods and avoid chewing on the treated side until the permanent crown is in place.

While wearing the temporary filling or crown: Avoid sticky or very hard foods that could dislodge the temporary. If the temporary comes loose, call us — don’t leave the prepared tooth unprotected.

Getting the crown promptly: A root canal-treated tooth without a crown is significantly more prone to fracture — particularly back teeth. Patients who delay crown placement risk fracturing the tooth and losing it, which defeats the purpose of the root canal. We place same-day temporaries so the tooth is protected from day one, with the permanent crown placed one to two weeks later.

Long-term care: Brush, floss, and maintain your regular dental cleanings every six months. Your dentist checks root canal-treated teeth and crown integrity at every routine exam. With quality materials and consistent maintenance, a root canal-treated tooth can last a lifetime.

Walgreens Directly Across the Street

When your root canal appointment requires a prescription — post-procedure pain medication or antibiotics for an active infection — the Walgreens directly across from our Richardson office means your medication is filled before you’re home. No extra trip across Richardson while you’re recovering. For patients dealing with an active dental infection, that proximity is genuinely meaningful.

Root Canal Cost and Insurance in Richardson

Root canal cost depends on which tooth is being treated and case complexity — front teeth with fewer canals are typically less expensive than molars with three or four canals. A crown, recommended in most cases, is an additional cost. By performing root canals in-house rather than referring to a specialist, our Richardson office keeps costs significantly lower — often two to three times less than endodontist rates.

Most dental insurance plans that include major restorative coverage contribute toward root canal treatment. Our team verifies your specific benefits before treatment so you know your out-of-pocket estimate before we start. For patients without insurance, our Healthy Smiles Discount Plan provides discounted rates on root canals and crowns — $89/year for the primary member, $49/year for each additional family member. Visit our insurance page for the full carrier list. In-house payment plans are available for patients who need to spread costs over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I need a root canal or just a filling?

A filling addresses decay that hasn’t reached the pulp. A root canal is needed when bacteria have infected the pulp tissue inside the tooth. Signs of pulp infection include severe or spontaneous pain, lingering sensitivity to temperature, swelling, and tooth discoloration. Your dentist uses digital X-rays and clinical tests to determine which is indicated — symptoms alone aren’t always conclusive. If you’re unsure, call us and come in for an evaluation.

In most cases, yes. We prioritize patients with dental pain and in many cases can diagnose and treat a root canal at the same appointment. Call (972) 248-9119 and let us know you’re in pain — we’ll get you in as quickly as possible.

We keep root canals in-house when we can perform them well — which is the case for the vast majority of cases we see. In-house treatment means significantly lower cost, same-day treatment, and continuity of care with a team that already knows you. We refer complex cases that genuinely need specialist-level intervention — but that’s a small minority of what we see

For most teeth — especially molars and premolars — yes. Root canal-treated teeth become more brittle over time and are significantly more prone to fracture without crown protection. We place a same-day temporary crown at your preparation appointment so the tooth is protected immediately. The permanent crown follows one to two weeks later.

Yes if you had local anesthetic only — the numbness wears off within a few hours and doesn’t affect driving. If you had nitrous oxide, you can also drive home — nitrous clears within minutes of removing the mask.

Walgreens is directly across the street from our Richardson location — the fastest possible option for filling a prescription after your appointment.

A small percentage of root canals fail — typically from new decay, a missed canal, or a cracked root. Signs include return of pain, new swelling, or a new abscess near a previously treated tooth. Retreatment or referral to an endodontist can save the tooth in many of these cases. Our team discusses all options if this occurs.

Tooth pain is your body asking for help. The sooner we see you, the more options we have — and the faster we can get you out of pain.
