If you’re in dental pain right now — stop reading and call us.
(972) 248-9119 — Thrive Dental & Orthodontics Richardson
We’re on the corner of East Renner Road and North Star Road. We reserve same-day appointments for dental emergencies and have been serving the Richardson community for over a decade. Call and we will get you in as fast as possible.
When in doubt — call. Our team helps you assess your situation over the phone and determines how quickly you need to be seen. Here’s a general guide:
Call immediately — same-day care needed:
Urgent but can typically wait a day or two:
The rule: significant pain, visible swelling, fever, or a knocked-out tooth — don’t wait. Call (972) 248-9119 right now.
When a dental emergency strikes, you need a team that treats the problem — not just the symptoms. Most urgent care centers and many dental offices can only offer temporary pain management and send you home with a referral. Our Richardson office does more than that.
We perform emergency root canals and tooth extractions in-house at our Richardson location. If your toothache is caused by a pulp infection, we can diagnose and treat it at the same appointment in most cases. If a tooth can’t be saved, we extract it the same day and discuss replacement options before you leave. We don’t send patients home to wait when we can resolve the problem today.
For active dental infections requiring antibiotic treatment, our Richardson dental team prescribes what’s clinically indicated at your emergency appointment. Pain medication is managed appropriately for significant post-procedure discomfort. You leave with what you need — not a referral to come back later.
When you leave our Richardson office with a prescription, the Walgreens directly across from our office means your medication is filled immediately — no extra trip, no driving across town while you’re in pain. For patients dealing with a dental infection or post-procedure discomfort, that convenience is genuinely important.
We staff multiple hygienists at our Richardson office so same-day appointments are a real operational capability. When you call with a dental emergency, we prioritize getting you in quickly — call (972) 248-9119 as soon as the problem starts.
Once you’re in the chair and fully numb, Netflix plays on two TVs in the treatment room — one above you and one at eye level. Patients who come in tense and anxious consistently tell us that thorough anesthesia plus a familiar show on screen made an emergency procedure far more manageable than they feared.
Our Richardson team has been handling dental emergencies in this community for over ten years. That experience matters — in reading radiographs accurately, in managing complex infections, in knowing when to treat in-house and when to coordinate a referral, and in keeping patients calm during procedures they’re frightened of.
Our Richardson waiting area has coffee, water, and drinks available, a large flat screen TV, and comfortable seating. Our kids’ lounge — with a couch, Nintendo Wii, and PlayStation — keeps children settled while you’re being treated. If a family member brings you in during an emergency, they have a genuinely comfortable space to wait.
Severe toothache or abscess:
Take ibuprofen as directed — it addresses both pain and inflammation. Rinse with warm salt water. Apply a cold compress to the outside of the cheek for 15–20 minutes at a time. Do not apply heat. Call us while you’re doing this and we’ll have your appointment ready when you arrive.
Knocked-out permanent tooth:
Pick up the tooth by the crown — never touch the root. Rinse gently with clean water if dirty. If possible, gently reinsert into the socket and hold it there. If reinsertion isn’t possible, keep it moist — in milk, saline, or between your cheek and gum. Call us immediately and drive straight in. Every minute matters — reimplantation within 30 minutes gives the best survival chance.
Do not attempt to reinsert a knocked-out baby tooth. Call us for guidance.
Cracked or broken tooth:
Rinse with warm water. Apply a cold compress to the outside of your face. Save any large fragments. Take over-the-counter pain medication. If sharp pain occurs when air touches the tooth, that’s likely a nerve exposure — call us immediately.
Dental abscess with spreading facial swelling:
If swelling is moving toward the eye, throat, or neck — or if you have difficulty swallowing or breathing — go to an emergency room immediately. This is a potentially life-threatening spreading infection. Call us on the way and we’ll coordinate follow-up dental care once you’re medically stable.
Lost crown or filling:
Re-cement temporarily using Dentemp or similar pharmacy dental cement. Do not use super glue. Avoid chewing on that side. If there’s significant pain or sensitivity, call for a same-day appointment. If it’s manageable, schedule within a few days.
Dental infections are the most serious dental emergencies because of how they progress. An untreated infection that starts in a tooth follows a predictable path — from the tooth to surrounding bone, then to the soft tissues of the jaw and neck. A spreading infection can compromise the airway and become life-threatening.
Pain that comes and goes doesn’t mean the infection is resolving. It often means the nerve has died while the infection continues spreading silently through the bone.
Signs of a dental infection requiring urgent care:
Our Richardson dental team assesses infections quickly, prescribes antibiotics when indicated, and performs definitive treatment — root canal or extraction — in the same visit when clinically appropriate. The Walgreens across the street means your antibiotic prescription is filled immediately.
Emergency root canals. When infection has reached the pulp of a tooth, a root canal relieves the pain and saves the tooth. We perform emergency root canals in-house at our Richardson location for most cases. The procedure is far more comfortable than its reputation — with modern local anesthetic, most patients are surprised by how manageable it actually is. The Walgreens across the street means your post-procedure prescription is filled before you’re home.
Emergency tooth extractions. When a tooth is too severely infected or damaged to save, extraction removes the source of pain and infection and prevents further spread. We perform emergency extractions in-house, discuss tooth replacement options at the same appointment, and offer bone grafting at the time of extraction to protect the jaw for future restoration.
Abscess treatment. Drainage of the infection, antibiotic prescription as clinically indicated, and definitive treatment of the underlying cause — root canal or extraction depending on whether the tooth can be saved.
Re-cementing crowns and replacing lost fillings. Quick, same-day fixes for displaced restorations. Don’t leave a prepared tooth unprotected for more than a day or two.
Temporary crown placement. For broken teeth, a same-day temporary crown restores structure and function immediately while a permanent crown is fabricated.
Prescription pain relief and antibiotics. Prescribed at your emergency appointment when clinically appropriate. The nearby Walgreens means your prescription is filled quickly without an extra trip.
Nitrous oxide for anxious patients. For patients with significant dental anxiety or those facing more involved emergency procedures, nitrous oxide is available at our Richardson office to make the experience as manageable as possible.
Kids get hurt — and pediatric dental emergencies are frightening for parents. Our Richardson team handles children’s dental emergencies with extra care and a calm approach built on over a decade of experience with young patients.
Knocked-out baby tooth: Do not reinsert — it can damage the developing permanent tooth underneath. Bring the tooth and come in. We assess whether any intervention is needed.
Knocked-out permanent tooth in a child: Same protocol as adults — time is critical. Keep the tooth moist and get here as fast as possible.
Broken tooth from a fall or sports: Bring any fragments. We assess the damage, treat appropriately, and ensure the child is comfortable throughout.
Toothache in a child: Often a cavity that has reached the nerve. We treat the infection, relieve the pain, and explain next steps to parents clearly.
While your child is being seen, any siblings or family members waiting can use our kids’ lounge — a couch, Nintendo Wii, and PlayStation to keep children settled while adults are occupied.
Broken brackets, poking wires, lost aligners, and loose bands cause pain and can disrupt treatment progress if left unaddressed. For a poking wire, cover the end with orthodontic wax immediately. If wax isn’t controlling it, carefully clip the end with clean nail clippers as a temporary measure.
For a broken bracket or loose band, call our emergency orthodontist line — we get Richardson patients in quickly for same-day repairs when possible.
If an Invisalign aligner is lost or damaged, revert to your previous set immediately and call us — don’t leave your teeth without an aligner for more than a day or two.
Emergency dental costs vary significantly depending on what treatment is needed. A re-cemented crown is a very different cost from an emergency root canal and crown. We discuss costs and options with you before beginning treatment — no surprises.
We accept 18+ PPO dental insurance plans at our Richardson location. Our team verifies your benefits on the spot and tells you what’s covered before proceeding. For patients without insurance, our Healthy Smiles Discount Plan at $89/year provides discounted rates on emergency and restorative procedures — $49/year for each additional family member. In-house payment plans are available for larger treatment costs. Visit our insurance page for details.
Do not let cost concerns prevent you from seeking urgent dental care. An untreated dental infection becomes dramatically more expensive and dangerous the longer it’s left.
We reserve same-day appointments specifically for dental emergencies. Call (972) 248-9119 immediately — we prioritize emergency patients and work to get you in as fast as our schedule allows, often within hours.
