Dental Crowns in Frisco, TX - Thrive Dental & Orthodontics

When a tooth is damaged, cracked, or has decay too extensive for a filling to fix, a dental crown is the restoration that saves it — capping the tooth completely to restore its shape, strength, and function. At Thrive Dental & Orthodontics in Frisco, we’ve built a crown process that’s faster, more comfortable, and more precise than most patients have experienced elsewhere.

We use a 3D digital intraoral scanner — no impressions, no putty, no gagging. We place a same-day temporary crown at your preparation appointment so you walk out with a restoration already in place. And our permanent crowns are fabricated from premium Emax and Zirconia ceramics at trusted dental labs that hold exacting standards for fit, color matching, and durability.

We’re on the corner of Hillcrest and Rolater Road in east Frisco, near Lebanon High School and the Collin College Frisco campus. Book your appointment or call (972) 371-0616.

When Do You Need a Dental Crown?

A crown is recommended when a tooth has significant damage, decay, or structural compromise — but the root and surrounding bone are still intact and worth saving. Common situations at our Frisco office include:

  • A large cavity that has grown beyond what a filling can adequately restore
  • A cracked or fractured tooth — particularly one where the crack extends toward the gumline
  • A broken tooth from trauma or biting on something hard
  • After a root canal — back teeth without crown protection after root canal treatment are significantly more prone to fracture
  • Covering a dental implant — the crown is the visible, functional part of an implant restoration
  • Anchoring a dental bridge on either side of a gap
  • Replacing a failing old crown that has cracked, come loose, or developed decay at the margin
  • Cosmetic restoration for a severely discolored or misshapen tooth that veneers can’t adequately address

If you’re not sure whether a crown is what you need — a dental checkup and X-rays give us the full picture. Sometimes what looks like it needs a crown only needs a filling, and sometimes the reverse. We’ll give you an honest assessment before recommending anything.

What Makes Our Frisco Crown Process Different

Same-day temporary — you leave with a crown

At most dental offices, the preparation appointment ends with your teeth reshaped and covered in a basic temporary while you wait two weeks for the permanent crown. At our Frisco location, we place a same-day temporary crown before you leave your very first appointment. Your prepared tooth is protected, your appearance is maintained, and you’re not waiting around with a bare or vulnerable tooth.

This matters more than it sounds. Prepared teeth are sensitive. Gaps and exposed margins affect how you bite and speak. A well-made same-day temporary gives you a functional, natural-looking solution from day one — and our patients consistently say the transition to the permanent crown feels seamless because they’ve already been wearing something that works.

Digital scanning — no impressions

The 3D digital intraoral scanner at our Frisco office maps your prepared teeth with precision in minutes. No impression trays, no gagging, no mess. The digital file goes directly to our dental lab electronically — more accurately than any physical impression — and produces a permanent crown that fits right the first time. For patients who have put off dental work because of bad impression experiences in the past, this technology genuinely removes that barrier.

Premium materials — Emax and Zirconia

Not all crowns are created equal. At our Frisco office we use Emax lithium disilicate porcelain for front teeth and visible areas — a high-strength ceramic with exceptional translucency that mimics the light-reflecting properties of natural tooth enamel. For back teeth where bite forces are highest, we use Zirconia — one of the most durable ceramic materials in dentistry, resistant to fracture and gentle on opposing teeth.

Both materials are fabricated at partner labs we trust for consistency and quality. A crown done right with premium materials lasts significantly longer than one made with lower-quality alternatives. We don’t compromise on materials because ultimately it serves our patients better — and costs them less when they don’t need early replacement.

Netflix during your appointment

Every treatment room at our Frisco office has two TVs — one directly above the chair and one at eye level — with Netflix available throughout your appointment. Crown preparation appointments can run 60–90 minutes. Watching something you actually want to see makes that time pass quickly. Patients who come in nervous about a long procedure consistently tell us it was easier than they expected.

A lobby worth sitting in

Our Frisco waiting area is genuinely comfortable — coffee, water, and drinks available, a large TV, and lounge-style seating that feels nothing like a typical dental waiting room. Any family members who come with you have a relaxed space to settle in while you’re in your appointment.

Crown Material Options at Our Frisco Location

Emax Porcelain Crowns

Emax is our preferred material for front teeth and any area of the smile where aesthetics matter most. Made from lithium disilicate ceramic, Emax crowns have a natural translucency and depth that closely mimics natural tooth enamel — they’re virtually indistinguishable from surrounding teeth when properly color-matched. Emax is also highly stain-resistant, meaning your crown maintains its brightness over time even with regular coffee and tea.

With proper care, Emax crowns routinely last 10–15 years or longer. They’re strong enough for most locations in the mouth and offer the most natural-looking result available in crown dentistry.

Zirconia Crowns

For molars and premolars — the back teeth that bear the heaviest bite forces — Zirconia is our recommendation. Zirconium dioxide is among the strongest ceramic materials used in dentistry. It handles the repetitive chewing forces of posterior teeth without the fracture risk of older porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns, and it’s gentler on opposing teeth than metal alternatives.

Zirconia crowns are also an excellent choice for patients who grind their teeth — bruxism puts enormous stress on restorations, and Zirconia’s strength profile makes it the most durable option in those situations. We typically recommend a custom night guard alongside any crown for grinding patients to protect both the restoration and surrounding teeth.

Choosing the right material

The choice between Emax and Zirconia comes down to where the tooth is located and what demands it faces. Our Frisco dental team makes this recommendation based on your specific tooth, bite, and clinical situation — not a blanket protocol. We’ll explain the recommendation clearly at your appointment so you understand exactly why we’re suggesting what we suggest.

The Crown Process at Our Frisco Office — Step by Step

Exam and diagnosis

Your dentist examines the tooth, reviews digital X-rays, and confirms that a crown is the right treatment. If there’s any decay or infection that needs to be addressed first — such as a root canal — that happens before crown preparation begins. We always treat the underlying problem before placing a restoration on top of it.

Tooth preparation and digital scan

The tooth is numbed thoroughly with local anesthetic and gently reshaped to create the right foundation for the crown. Our 3D digital intraoral scanner then captures a precise model of the prepared tooth and surrounding bite — no impressions. This file goes electronically to our lab.

Same-day temporary placement

Before you leave, your same-day temporary crown is placed. It protects the prepared tooth, maintains your bite and appearance, and gives you a functional restoration to wear during the one to two weeks your permanent crown is being fabricated. Treat it carefully during this period — avoid sticky or very hard foods and floss gently around it.

Permanent crown delivery

When your permanent crown arrives from the lab, you return for the final appointment — typically shorter than the preparation visit, usually 30–45 minutes. Your dentist removes the temporary, tries the permanent crown in to verify fit, bite, and color, makes any needed adjustments, and cements it permanently. Your bite is checked and refined as needed.

Long-term care

A root canal-treated tooth under a crown needs the same daily care as natural teeth — brush, floss, and maintain your regular dental cleanings. Your dentist checks crown integrity at every routine exam. The margin where the crown meets the gumline is the most vulnerable area — keeping that area clean prevents decay from developing underneath the crown over time.

How Long Do Crowns Last?

With proper care, a well-made crown placed on a healthy tooth typically lasts 10–15 years — and many last significantly longer. The factors that most affect longevity:

Oral hygiene at the margin. The crown itself can’t decay, but the tooth structure at the junction between crown and gumline can. Thorough brushing and daily flossing are essential.

Grinding and clenching. Bruxism places significant forces on crowns and is a leading cause of premature failure. If you grind, a custom night guard protects both your crown and your natural teeth.

Regular dental visits. Your dentist checks crown integrity at every exam — looking for cracks, margin breakdown, or signs of decay underneath. Catching a crown issue early means a simple repair rather than replacement.

Quality of materials and lab. Premium materials fabricated by high-quality labs simply last longer than cheaper alternatives. This is why we don’t cut corners on the lab work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I leave the preparation appointment without a crown?

No — we place a same-day temporary crown before you leave your preparation appointment. You walk out with a functional restoration already in place. The temporary protects your prepared tooth and maintains your appearance and bite while the permanent crown is fabricated over the following one to two weeks.

The preparation appointment uses local anesthetic — you feel pressure and movement but should not feel pain. Some sensitivity around the prepared tooth between appointments is normal and typically resolves when the permanent crown is cemented. The delivery appointment is usually quick and comfortable.

Two appointments. The first covers tooth preparation, digital scanning, and same-day temporary placement. The second — one to two weeks later — is the permanent crown delivery. Each appointment is straightforward and the second is typically shorter.

Yes — when fabricated with quality materials and proper color matching, crowns are virtually indistinguishable from surrounding teeth. Emax crowns in particular have a depth and translucency that closely replicates natural enamel. Most patients report that friends and family can’t tell which tooth has a crown.

This is common — root canals and crowns frequently go together, particularly for back teeth. We perform most root canals in-house at our Frisco location, and the crown is placed at a follow-up appointment after the root canal. Our team will sequence the treatment clearly so you know exactly what’s coming at each visit.

Yes — and Zirconia is particularly well-suited for grinding patients because of its exceptional strength. We also recommend a custom night guard to protect your crown and surrounding teeth from the forces of nocturnal grinding. Your dentist will discuss this at your consultation.

A damaged tooth doesn’t have to stay that way. With same-day temporaries, digital scanning, and premium materials, our Frisco crown process is designed to get you the best possible restoration as efficiently as possible.
