FRISCO

Children's Dentist in Frisco, TX — Thrive Dental & Orthodontics

Getting kids to actually look forward to the dentist takes more than a sticker at the end. At Thrive Dental & Orthodontics in Frisco, we’ve built a children’s dental experience that genuinely earns that reaction — from the moment they walk into our kids’ lounge to the free toy they pick on their way out.

We welcome children starting from their first birthday and serve families from throughout Frisco, Plano, Allen, and the surrounding communities near Lebanon High School and the Collin College Frisco campus. Book your child’s appointment or call (972) 371-0616.

Tips for Parents — Making Dental Visits Go Smoothly

Start before there’s a problem. Children who visit the dentist regularly from infancy build familiarity and comfort. Children who only come when something hurts associate dental visits with pain. The first visit by age one sets the tone for everything that follows.

Use positive, neutral language. Avoid words like “hurt,” “shot,” “drill,” or “pain” before appointments. Let our team introduce new tools and procedures in kid-friendly language — we have a whole vocabulary designed for this. Try: “the dentist is going to count your teeth” or “they’re going to use a special tickle brush.”

Don’t transfer your own anxiety. Kids are perceptive. If a parent is visibly nervous, the child picks up on it. A calm, matter-of-fact tone before appointments makes a real difference: “We’re going to the dentist today — they’ll clean your teeth and you’ll get to pick a toy at the end.”

Make brushing a consistent routine. Two minutes, twice a day, from the first tooth. For toddlers who resist, see our guide on how to get kids to brush their teeth — it has practical strategies that actually work. For children old enough to brush independently, a kids’ electric toothbrush with a timer dramatically improves how long and how effectively they brush.

Choose the right toothpaste. For infants and toddlers, our guide on non-toxic baby toothpaste covers what to look for and specific recommendations by age. Bring any questions to your child’s appointment — we’re happy to talk through options.

What Makes Our Frisco Kids’ Dental Experience Different

A kids’ lounge built for real entertainment

Most dental offices have a corner with a few toys. Our Frisco kids’ lounge is genuinely different. It features a giant TV playing kids’ shows and two gaming consoles — a PlayStation and a Nintendo Wii — so children have real choices for how they spend their time waiting. For families with multiple children, or for siblings tagging along to a parent’s appointment, this space changes the dynamic of the entire visit.

Kids who arrive at the lounge and get absorbed in a game are relaxed, happy, and far easier to transition into the appointment than children who have been sitting restlessly in a standard waiting room. Parents tell us their kids ask to come along to appointments because of the game room — which is exactly the relationship with dental care we want to build.

Netflix kids’ shows in the treatment room during procedures

When it’s time for the actual appointment, the fun continues. Every treatment room at our Frisco office has two TVs — one directly above the chair and one at eye level — and we put on kids’ Netflix during procedures. We pick age-appropriate shows your child loves, or let them choose.

A child who is watching their favorite show during a cleaning, a filling, or even a more involved procedure is a dramatically different patient from one staring at a ceiling under bright lights. The TV gives them something to focus on that isn’t dental work — and it genuinely changes the experience. We’ve had children who came in frightened leave asking what happens in the next episode.

Nitrous oxide for anxious children and involved procedures

For children who need extra support — significant dental anxiety, a more involved procedure, or a temperament that benefits from additional calming — nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is available at our Frisco location.

Nitrous oxide is inhaled through a small mask placed over the nose. Within minutes most children feel relaxed, calm, and noticeably less aware of what’s happening in the chair. The local anesthetic still handles all pain prevention for any treatment — the nitrous handles the anxiety. The combination makes even procedures children dread — fillings, extractions — remarkably manageable.

Nitrous wears off within minutes of removing the mask, so there’s no prolonged sedation recovery. Your child can typically return to normal activity the same day. It’s one of the most effective tools we have for helping anxious children through procedures they would otherwise find very difficult, and parents consistently tell us it made the difference between a traumatic experience and a manageable one.

A free toy after every single visit

Every child who comes to our Frisco office leaves with a free toy — every time, no exceptions. This isn’t a reward for good behavior. It’s a consistent, predictable part of every visit — something children know is coming and look forward to from the moment they arrive.

The psychology of this is real. The last experience a child has at the dentist shapes how they feel about coming back. Leaving with something fun in hand — something they picked themselves — makes the visit end on a genuinely positive note. Parents use it as a motivator before appointments. Kids remember it between visits. It’s a small thing that has a meaningful effect on building the kind of positive relationship with dental care that lasts a lifetime.

A large, comfortable lobby for the whole family

Our Frisco waiting area is spacious and genuinely welcoming — coffee, water, and drinks available, a large TV, and lounge-style seating with couches and comfortable areas to settle into. For parents who come in with one child being seen while another plays in the kids’ lounge, or for families who are used to the fluorescent-lit waiting rooms of most dental offices, the Frisco lobby is a noticeably different experience.

A team that genuinely loves working with children

Amenities matter, but the people matter more. Our Frisco team members who work with children have both the clinical training and the personal temperament for pediatric care — patience, a calm and warm demeanor, age-appropriate language, and a genuine enjoyment of working with young patients.

We never rush a child. We explain tools and procedures in kid-friendly terms — “wiggling” instead of “injecting,” counting to ten before anything begins, showing instruments before using them. We go at each child’s pace. For children with sensory sensitivities or special needs, we adapt our approach around what makes them most comfortable — please call ahead and let us know so we can prepare.

First dental visits — babies and toddlers

We welcome children beginning at six months old — or within six months of the first tooth erupting. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a first dental visit by the first birthday, and we follow that guideline.

Your baby’s first visit is gentle, brief, and low-key. Your child sits in your lap while we take a quick look at any erupted teeth, assess gum and jaw development, and discuss what to expect as more teeth come in. There’s nothing intimidating about it — the goal is to introduce your child to the office and our team in the most positive way possible, establishing familiarity before there’s ever a problem to fix.

Routine cleanings and exams

We recommend professional dental cleanings and comprehensive exams every six months starting from the first birthday. At each visit our hygienists remove plaque and tartar buildup, polish teeth, take age-appropriate X-rays at the right intervals, and evaluate gum health. Your dentist then performs a full exam including an oral cancer screening.

According to the CDC, more than half of children between ages 6 and 8 have had cavities in their baby teeth — a number that climbs to 57% for children 12–19 for their permanent teeth. Twice-yearly cleanings catch developing decay early, when it’s a quick, simple filling rather than a crown or more involved treatment.

Dental sealants

Dental sealants are a thin protective coating applied to the chewing surfaces of permanent molars — typically between ages 6 and 14 — where decay most commonly begins. The deep grooves in molar surfaces trap food and bacteria in ways that even thorough brushing can’t fully reach. Sealants eliminate those traps and have been shown to reduce cavity risk on treated surfaces by up to 80%.

Application is painless, quick, and done at a regular cleaning appointment. If your child’s permanent molars are erupting, ask our team at their next visit whether sealants are appropriate.

Fluoride treatments

Concentrated fluoride treatments are applied at cleaning appointments — a varnish that takes about a minute and provides months of enamel strengthening protection. We evaluate each child individually for fluoride needs. For children at higher cavity risk, more frequent applications may be recommended.

For parents who have questions about fluoride — alternatives, timing, amount — we have that conversation openly at your child’s appointment. There are non-fluoride approaches for families who prefer them.

Tooth-colored fillings

When a cavity is found, we treat it promptly using tooth-colored composite fillings that match the natural tooth. Extra care is taken with younger patients — thorough numbing, kid-friendly explanations, and an unhurried approach. With kids’ Netflix on in the treatment room and nitrous oxide available for anxious children, most kids are surprised by how manageable a filling appointment actually is.

Baby teeth deserve proper treatment. They hold space for permanent teeth, support speech and chewing development, and affect a child’s confidence. Untreated cavities in baby teeth spread, cause pain, and can damage the permanent teeth developing beneath them.

Emergency dental care for children

Kids get hurt — knocked-out teeth, broken teeth from falls or sports, sudden toothaches, and dental infections. Our emergency dental team sees pediatric emergencies as quickly as possible, often same day. Call us immediately at the first sign of a dental emergency.

For a knocked-out permanent tooth, time is critical — reimplantation within 30 minutes gives the best chance of saving it. For a knocked-out baby tooth, do not attempt to reinsert it — call us and we’ll walk you through what to do.

Children’s orthodontics

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first orthodontic evaluation by age 7. At this stage our Frisco orthodontic team can identify developing bite issues, jaw discrepancies, or crowding early — when they’re often much easier to address than after full eruption.

When the time comes for active treatment, we offer metal braces, clear ceramic braces, and Invisalign Teen at our Frisco location. Free orthodontic consultations are available. See our guide on 9 signs your child may need braces for a detailed look at what we evaluate.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should my child first see a dentist?

By their first birthday or within six months of the first tooth erupting — whichever comes first. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends this timeline. Starting early builds familiarity and allows us to catch any developing concerns before they become problems.

Yes — this is something we’re experienced with and take seriously. Please call ahead and let us know your child has dental anxiety so we can prepare. We set aside extra time, go at your child’s pace, use every comfort tool available including Netflix in the treatment room and nitrous oxide when appropriate, and never rush or force. Most anxious children become comfortable after a few positive visits. The key is making those first visits genuinely good experiences — which is exactly what we design for.

Absolutely. Baby teeth hold space for permanent teeth, support speech and chewing development, and affect a child’s confidence and nutrition. Untreated decay in baby teeth spreads, causes pain, and can damage developing permanent teeth underneath them. They deserve the same care as permanent teeth.

We explain exactly what’s needed and why before proceeding with any treatment beyond routine cleaning. For fillings or other procedures, we discuss the options and what to expect — and we use every comfort tool available to make the experience as manageable as possible. Nitrous oxide is available for procedures that need extra comfort support.

Yes — free, no obligation. Our Frisco orthodontic team evaluates your child’s teeth, bite, and jaw development and gives you a clear picture of whether treatment is needed, when the right time is, and what options would be most appropriate. We follow AAO guidelines recommending evaluation by age 7.

Your child’s relationship with dental care starts here. We’d love to be their dental home from the very first tooth through the teen years and beyond.
