Orthodontic Retention

Keeping your smile straight doesn’t stop when your braces or aligners come off.

At Thrive Dental & Orthodontics, we’re here to make sure your results last a lifetime. Orthodontic retention is the key to maintaining your smile’s new alignment—and we’re with you every step of the way.

Whether you’ve just completed orthodontic treatment or it’s been a while since your last adjustment, our team will guide you through the next phase with custom retainers and personalized care.

Why Retainers Matter After Braces or Aligners

You’ve put in the work to straighten your teeth—and retention is how you keep them that way. Once braces or clear aligners come off, your teeth can begin to shift back to their original position if not properly supported.

Orthodontic retention helps:

  • Prevent shifting or crowding
  • Protect your bite alignment
  • Preserve your smile’s appearance
  • Avoid the need for future orthodontic treatment

In short: Retainers protect your investment in a healthier, more confident smile.

Choosing the Right Retainer for You

There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to retention. That’s why we offer a variety of options—each custom-made for your smile and lifestyle.

Fixed Retainers: Worry-Free and Always Working

A fixed retainer is a thin wire bonded to the back of your front teeth. It’s invisible from the outside and stays in place around the clock, providing continuous support with zero effort.

Best for: Patients who want a low-maintenance solution or are prone to forgetting their removable retainer.

Removable Retainers: Flexible and Easy to Clean

Removable retainers—such as clear Essix retainers or Hawley retainers—are taken out during meals or brushing. They’re clear, comfortable, and perfect for patients who want flexibility and control.

Best for: Patients who can commit to consistent wear and proper care.

We’ll help you decide which type is right for you based on your unique needs, preferences, and treatment history.

Caring for Your Retainer: Simple Tips for Long-Term Success

Retainers only work if you wear them—and care for them. Here’s how to keep yours in top shape:

  • Wear as directed: Follow your orthodontist’s instructions on how often to wear your retainer, especially during the first year.
  • Keep it clean: Use a soft toothbrush and gentle soap to clean daily. Avoid toothpaste, which can scratch the surface.
  • Avoid heat and pets: Retainers can warp in hot water—and pets love to chew them!
  • Store it safely: Always use the case when not in use to avoid damage or loss.
  • Bring it to your checkups: We’ll make sure it still fits well and stays effective.

If your retainer feels tight or loose—or if you’ve lost it—reach out. We’ll get you back on track quickly.

Long-Term Retention = Lifelong Confidence

Orthodontic retention isn’t just a final step—it’s an essential part of your smile’s success. Teeth can shift throughout life due to aging, habits, and changes in your jaw structure. Wearing your retainer as recommended ensures that the hard work you’ve put into your smile continues to pay off.

Ready to Keep Your Smile in Place?

If you’ve completed orthodontic treatment—or even if it’s been a while since your last check-in—our team is here to help you stay on track. We’ll make sure your retainer fits comfortably and works effectively to protect your results.

How long do I need to wear my retainer?

Every smile is different, but most patients are advised to wear their retainer full-time for the first several months after treatment. After that, you may transition to nighttime wear. In many cases, lifelong nighttime use is recommended to prevent shifting.

What happens if I stop wearing my retainer?

If you stop wearing your retainer, your teeth can gradually shift back to their original positions. This is called orthodontic relapse. Even small movements can affect your bite, comfort, and appearance—so it’s important to stick with your retention plan.

Can I get a new retainer if I lost mine?

Absolutely. Life happens! If you’ve lost or damaged your retainer, give us a call right away. We’ll schedule a fitting and get a new one made quickly so you don’t lose your progress.

Are retainers uncomfortable?

Retainers might feel snug at first, especially if you haven’t worn yours in a while. That’s normal! Custom retainers are designed for comfort and should never hurt. If yours causes soreness or doesn’t fit properly, schedule a checkup so we can adjust or replace it.

Will my insurance cover a new retainer?

Some dental insurance plans offer partial or full coverage for retainers—especially if they’re part of your original orthodontic treatment. Our team is happy to check your benefits and handle the paperwork for you. If you’re not covered or need a replacement outside your coverage period, we offer flexible financing options to help make your care affordable without added stress. Just ask us—we’re here to help.
